Accessories

The number of available accessories depends on the camera and manufacturer.

Lens Filters
If a camera allows extra lenses or filters it will probably only be compatible with certain ones made for it, and in most cases require buying a Lens Adapter too.

Lens filters can be very handy for certain situations and give far better results than normal.

Examples are:

Fluro Filter
Enhances colour and removes green tinge under Flurecent lighting.

UV Filter
Good for protecting the lens but doesn't do too much else that's as noticable.

Polarising Filter
Eliminates certain angles of light, so you can see through the glare such as on top of water etc. Also improves contrast and acts as a Neutral Density Filter too.

Graduated Neutral Density Filter
Although rare, these filters are good for landscapes/ sunsets, etc. where the sky would otherwise turn out too bright and the landscape turns out too dark without one. The filter has a darkened area on one half that fades out to the other half.

Extra lenses

These are:

Wide Angle
For fitting in more of a scene than is possible with the attached lens.

Telephoto
Usually adds about 2.5x to the inbuilt zoom of the camera. So if it has a 4x zoom for example, this will increase it to a 9x zoom.

Macro (closeup)
A lens that can let you take photos of things closer than the camera normally would. So if the camera allows getting only 5cm to the object, these can make it 1cm for example.

Underwater Cases
Most manufactures also make underwater cases for their cameras so that you can take the camera underwater.

Memory Cards
Always worth considering buying an extra high capacity one because a camera usually only comes with a 16MB memory card, allowing only about 10 photos to be taken.

Cases
Soft carry cases are most popular for protecting the camera from scratches while being taken around.

Neck Strap
A neck strap is very useful for having your camera ready to go by hanging down from your neck.
